Alan Childs, professor of psychology, will host the second “Books & Coffee” program of the semester 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26 in the back room of Gilbert’s Cafe. He will be engaging students, faculty, and staff in a book discussion of Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

Free coffee and cookies will be provided.

Kite Runner tells an epic tale of fathers and sons and friendship and betrayal that takes the reader from the final days of Afghanistan’s monarchy to the atrocities of the present. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, the possibility of redemption, and the power a father holds over his son.

The “Books & Coffee” program gives students the opportunity to hear faculty and staff talk about topics that interest them apart from their research and teaching specializations and provides students with a chance to expand their learning by discussing books that are of interest to them.

Previous discussions have been with President Dan Weiss about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Suzanne Westfall, professor and head of English, about Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

“The ‘Books & Coffee’ series has been a great way for students to interact with faculty and staff members outside of the classroom.” says Jessica Manjack, assistant operations manager for student life programs. “Having coffee and listening to a talk about a recently published book is a pleasant way to spend an evening.”

The next “Books & Coffee” event will be hosted by Michelle Geoffrion-Vinci, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures, who will discuss Wicked by Gregory Maguire Wednesday, March 21. This event will also be part of the “Sex Week” activities on campus.
