Children from the Easton and Phillipsburg communities will participate in a variety of activities organized by Lafayette students during the seventh annual Literacy Day celebration 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 3 in the Marlo Room of Farinon College Center.
Participants, ages 5-17, are coming from Phillipsburg’s Firth Youth Center, Easton Area Community Center, Cheston Elementary School, Paxinosa Elementary School, South Side, and West Ward.
“Literacy Day is an excellent opportunity for students to engage the children in the community by cultivating a passion for reading and writing,” says planning committee co-chair Alberto Luna ’08 (Bronx, N.Y.), an English and psychology double major. “We hope to have the Lafayette students serve as role models and inspire the children to think about their immediate and long-term plans for the future. It is our hope that by promoting literacy, we will develop engaged and interested citizens within the Easton and Phillipsburg communities.”
Along with co-chairs Luna and Jonathan Farrar ’07 (Alexandria, Va.), who is pursuing a B.S. physics and A.B. with a major in mathematics, the Literacy Day planning committee consists of Danielle Bero ’07 (Astoria, N.Y.), a creative mediums and social justice major; Devin Canavan ’09 (Milford, N.J.); Rhonda Lee Davis ’09 (Bronx, N.Y.), a government and foreign language major; Samira Fowler ’07 (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.), a civil engineering major; Emily Giannotta ’09 (Simsbury, Conn.), a psychology major; Jacqueline Golden ’07 (Latham, N.Y.), a biology major; Arda Hotz ’08 (Moutainside, N.J.), a neuroscience major; Sarah Kolb ’07 (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), a biology major; Joanna Norelli ’08 (Langhorne, N.J.), a mathematics major; Brian Rotmil ’09 (Morganville, N.J.), an economics and business major; Julia Sorkin ’09 (Whippany, N.J.), an economics and business major; and Edward Yao ’08 (Bronx, N.Y.), a government and law major.
Literacy Day activities are sponsored by the Landis Community Outreach Center, Investment Club, Writing Organization Reaching Dynamic Students, Pards to People, HOLA floor, Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, Lambda Pi Upsilon sorority, Alpha Phi sorority, and Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Many of the children registered for the day’s activities also participate in Landis Center programs. Literacy Day programs are provided to participants free of charge, and are fully funded by charitable donations and a Lafayette Intercultural Networking Council grant.
In addition to reading, there will be dialogues about future plans, an artistic mural activity, book mark construction, and creative dance/step program. All participants will receive a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Oh the Places You’ll Go, another book of their choice, school supplies, and other items.
