The McKelvy House Scholars invite the campus to join them in a dinner discussion exploring the spirituality of pop culture Sunday, March 4.
The meal will begin at 6 p.m. at McKelvy House, 200 High Street. Kaydence Cowley ’07 (Littleton, Colo.), a mechanical engineering major, and Jaclyn Smith ’07 (Saugus, Calif.), a double major in psychology and English, will lead the discussion at 6:30 p.m. A dinner of hearty, homemade winter soups and bread will be served.
Cowley and Smith will lead a discussion about pop culture spirituality. Eastern religious practices such as yoga and meditation have taken a hold in Western culture. Cowley and Smith will investigate whether these practices are more than just popular trend.
Students will also have the chance to discuss spiritual healing’s physical effects on the body, and whether prayer can intercede and aid recovery after heart surgery. Their focus will be the question, “Has spirituality become a pop culture trend?”
Earlier in the day, McKelvy members plan to experience meditation first-hand through a yoga session, either in KirbySportsCenter or at a studio in downtown Easton.
McKelvy House is currently accepting nominations for new members next semester. All interested applicants are encouraged to attend discussions to talk with current residents about the program.
Since 1962, the McKelvy House Scholars program has brought together Lafayette students with a wide range of majors and interests to reside in a historic off-campus house and share in intellectual and social activities. Weekly Sunday, and occasional Wednesday, dinner discussions that engage students in debate and exchange of ideas are the hallmark of the program. Most members also contribute to the annual McKelvy Papers, written on a topic of each person’s choice. McKelvy Scholars participate in activities together such as field trips to plays, concerts, and exhibits, and sponsor events for the campus as well.
