Erica Lynes ’08 (Yardley, Pa.) and Elena Dones ’07 (Morristown, N.J.) participated in the 60th Annual Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival held March 2-4 at Lock Haven University.
The festival is the oldest of its kind in the nation and features a large concert band of 125 students representing 25 colleges and universities from across the state.
“This is the best band that most of these students will be part of in terms of quality and talent,” says James Moyer, associate professor of music and director of bands. “The program chosen for the concert is considerably difficult, and being selected for this band is the highest level of achievement for any band student in Pennsylvania.”
Dones, an English major who plays the flute, and Lynes, a chemical engineering major who plays the bass clarinet, traveled with Moyer to Lock Haven for two days of rehearsal and a concert Sunday, March 4.
“It was really great to be a part of this group and to be selected to play out of several other students not only from this school but from the state,” say Dones. “I definitely have grown as a performer.”
According to Moyer, this is the first time Lafayette has had two students selected for this statewide honor and he expects more Lafayette students to be selected for Intercollegiate Band in the future as the College band program continues to grow.
Lynes plans to attend graduate school for bioengineering and work in the pharmaceutical field. She plays in the Concert Band and Pep Band, and is involved with Lafayette’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, and ChemE Car Team. She studied abroad in Bremen, Germany last summer and is currently working on EXCEL research on microbial reduction of perchlorate with Javad Tavakoli, associate professor of chemical engineering.
Dones hopes to find a job in the theater and entertainment industry or teach elementary school. She plays in the small flute ensemble; is a member of Soulfege, club soccer, the Marquis Players, and College Theater; and is a tutor for America Reads. She studied the London theater through both a study abroad program and the London Theatre interim-abroad course.
