The Office of Intercultural Development and the Office of the Dean of Studies will recognize and honor members of the Lafayette community for their efforts and commitment in promoting diversity awareness and intercultural engagement on campus during the 2006-07 academic year at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Wilson Room, Pfenning Alumni Center.

The program includes hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, entertainment, and the awards ceremony.

“The Office of Intercultural Development requests nominations for ALANA (African, Latino/a, Asian, Native- American) students and those students with a demonstrated commitment to diversity in our community, especially seniors,” says Michael Benitez, director of intercultural development and director of the David A. Portlock Black Cultural Center.

“We hope that you will be able to join us in recognizing students, faculty, and staff and their commitment to promoting diversity on our campus. Please nominate via email to benitezm@lafayette.edu, identifying the award(s) and nominee(s) and providing an explanation (two paragraphs max) of your support. You can also send nominations to the Office of Intercultural Development via campus mail, if you prefer. The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, March 30, 2007,” Benitez says, adding, “Nominators should please be available and plan to attend the reception to make award presentations.”

A list of awards follows:

Darlyne Bailey ’74 Excellence in the Humanities and Social Sciences Award. A student whose academic/artistic accomplishments reflect an outstanding level of scholarship and advances understanding on an important issue.

Otis Ellis ’89 Scholar Athlete Award. A successful varsity athlete who has achieved an outstanding level of scholarship.

Leroy D. Nunery ’77 Intellectual Citizenship Award. A student whose research on important social, political or economic issues advances knowledge and involves the student in activities within a community

David A. Portlock Award. A student who has worked diligently to promote cross-cultural relationships on campus or in the community.

Jeffrey D. Robinson ’80 Leadership Award. An accomplished student who is also characterized by noteworthy leadership in College activities and student life.

Riley Temple ’71 Creative and Artistic Citizenship Award. A student whose creative scholarship in the visual and/or performance arts contributes to knowledge on societal issues of multicultural or intercultural concerns.

Excellence in Diversity Education Award. A faculty or administrator whose commitment and service to diversity on campus promotes awareness and a positive learning environment for all students.

Paving the Path Award. A student (freshman or sophomore) who has demonstrated potential for greatness in the years to come.
