Tariq al-Jamil, assistant professor of religion at Swarthmore College, will present “Polemics, Politics and Inter-Communal Violence in Contemporary Iraq”4:30 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 in Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the religious studies department, under the auspices of the Lyman Coleman Fund.
Al-Jamil will focus on sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shi’ites in modern Iraq. He will discuss the history of the conflict as well as prospects for the future of Iraq after the American-led invasion.
Al-Jamil is an expert on medieval Islamic social history and law, with a particular focus on Shi’ism. He has conducted extensive research on Sunni-Shi’i relations, Islam, and the social history of Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. He lectures extensively within the U.S. and abroad and has published his work in numerous scholarly journals.
Al-Jamil received a Ph.D. and M.A. from Princeton University, an M.T.S. from Harvard University, and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
