Although Melanie Seiden Lewin ’96 was among the first to join the Alumni Online Community after its official launch in May, it wasn’t until she moved out of Easton that she realized its full potential.

“To be honest, I didn’t use the service much right [away],” she admits. “However, when I moved out of the area it became essential when trying to keep in touch with the Lafayette community.”

Lewin, who teaches eighth-grade math in Philadelphia, says it enables her to stay in contact with alumni chapters in her area and keep apprised of all College events. One instance was when she sought out alumni with whom to watch the Lafayette-Lehigh football game.

“The online community allowed me to find a place where other alumni were watching the telecast,” she says. “As it turned out, alumni from my husband’s school, Ohio State University, were gathering at the same place to watch the game against Michigan. As a result, the service helped both of us work things out perfectly.”

The Alumni Online Community also has aided current students in reaching out to Lewin for advice.

“I have been contacted by Lafayette professors asking if I could speak with students and help them with projects,” she says. “It’s the Alumni Online Community that makes it possible for them to reach me so easily.”

Lewin says she “absolutely” would recommend the online community to other alumni.

“This service is especially great if you don’t live locally anymore,” she says. “It gives alumni the chance to carry a little bit of Lafayette College with them no matter where they go.”
