Frederick J. Quivey, who is retiring after 16 years of service as vice president for business affairs and treasurer, was recognized tonight at Lafayette’s annual pre-Commencement reception, dinner, and awards ceremony. President Daniel Weiss read the citation.

FREDERICK J. QUIVEY,

When a reporter from The Lafayette interviewed Fred Quivey not long after he announced his retirement, she asked him to summarize his duties as vice president for business affairs and treasurer. “I am responsible,” he replied, for “caring for and maintaining the assets of the college.”

Fred is of course far too modest to think of himself as one of Lafayette’s special assets. However, those who have worked closely with him over the past sixteen years know how critical his skill and expertise have been to the remarkable success the College has enjoyed. His efforts have contributed directly to the educational welfare of countless Lafayette undergraduates – not only those who were enrolled during his tenure as a senior member of the administration but also the students who will join us well into the future.

In addition to being an astute and conscientious manager of Lafayette’s endowment and physical plant, Fred has provided administrative oversight for the purchasing office, reprographic services, the bookstore, dining services, the campus post office, and the Office of Public Safety. He has also been instrumental in the acquisition of properties adjacent to this main campus and along North Third Street. In addition, Fred’s energy and talents have benefited the National Association of College & University Business Officers as well as the local United Way, the Bushkill Stream Conservancy, the College Hill Presbyterian Church, the Greater Easton Development Partnership, and the Weller Center for Health Education.

Fred, you and Beth have supported the Lafayette community as Sustaining Members of the Marquis Society and in so many other significant and sustaining ways. We have enjoyed – and valued – your friendship, and we look forward to having you return from Maine for Marquis Society dinners and other special Lafayette occasions.

Quivey was also presented the following message of gratitude by the Board of Trustees:

The Board of Trustees of Lafayette College expresses its deep appreciation to Frederick J. Quivey for his devoted service as the College’s Vice President for Business Affairs & Treasurer from 1991 to 2007.

Fred, your unique value to this board is reflected in the fact that you have served as secretary for three of our most important standing committees. Many of the key administrative functions at Lafayette – from fiscal management to facilities planning; from public safety to purchasing, dining services, and the College Store – have benefited from your keen attention and steady hand.

Although at times we may have wondered if you were being somewhat creative with the placement of the decimal point when you reported on the value of the endowment, independent auditors have confirmed that the past sixteen years have indeed been exceptionally good ones for Lafayette. Your careful stewardship is equally evident in the beauty of the campus, the more cordial relationship between the College and its neighbors, and the impressive resources that support every component of the Lafayette Experience.

Through this certificate of appreciation, we formally record our gratitude for the consummate dedication and skill – as well as the refreshing good humor – with which you have supported not only our work but also the fundamental mission of the College.
