Easton was among 14 cities nationwide to be designated a Preserve America Community by the federal government earlier this month.
Preserve America is a White House initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and celebrate local history and cultural heritage. Easton is now one of 500 communities nationwide to receive the designation.
Communities receive designation after demonstrating the use of historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encouraging people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
Easton’s annual Heritage Day celebration, the establishment of a Local Historic District, work by the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society, events at Hugh Moore Park, and the National Canal Museum, all played a role in the city’s designation.
Preserve America Communities receive White House recognition, eligibility to apply for Preserve America Grants, a Preserve America Community road sign, listing in a web-based Preserve America Community directory, and notification of designation to State tourism offices and visitor bureaus.
