Cadence and The Chorduroys prepare for busy semester of performances
By Liz Margolis ’09
Lafayette’s premier a cappella groups, Cadence and The Chorduroys, are preparing some exciting performances for Homecoming. The groups have kept themselves busy this fall, performing at the Block pARTy, holding tryouts for new members, learning and practicing new material, and readying themselves for shows.
The Chorduroys, Lafayette’s male ensemble, generally practice about twice a week and add additional practices when they have upcoming shows. Their auditions generally consist of some musical tests, a one- to two-minute solo of a pop song, and singing along with the group.
The group is working with new material to debut at Homecoming.
“To keep the audience engaged and active in shows, we have really tried to push the bar this semester and go places that most a cappella groups have never been,” says Dan Flaherty ’08.
Cadence, Lafayette’s female group, also has a lot in store for this semester. It has changed its practice time so that women from the group can participate in the Chamber Singers ensemble led by Jennifer Kelly, assistant professor of music. Cadence’s tryouts have had high turnout, with four new members accepted. The group will debut “All the Beauty in the World” from the Lion King this semester and has more surprise material in store.
In addition to Homecoming, Cadence will perform at An Afternoon of A Capella and its annual end-of-semester show. The group also hopes to travel to other colleges in the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia area to perform.
“We are a bunch of girls who come together over a common interest: singing,” says Gina Colaizzo ’09. “I can use and develop my leadership skills for something I truly enjoy.”
