D.C. Attorney and Survivor competitor Becky Lee speaks on Oct. 11
As part of October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Lafayette will be the first stop on the “Domestic Violence College Tour,” which is a national campaign sponsored by Becky’s Fund, a non-profit advocating for the right’s of battered women.
Becky Lee, a Washington, D.C. attorney who founded Becky’s Fund, will present “Know Your Rights: How to Recognize and Respond to Dating Violence,” 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in Limburg Theatre, Farinon College Center.
The event is part of Lafayette’s Take Back the Night, an annual campaign spearheaded by the Association of Lafayette Feminists (ALF) to raise awareness of violence against women. Lee’s talk is being sponsored by ALF, the Women’s Studies program, the Office of Religious Life, and the Office of the Dean of Students. Lunch will be provided.
In the evening, Lee will also hold a private dinner program on domestic violence for local single mothers at Easton’s Third St. Alliance for Women and Children.
Lee founded Becky Lee Women’s Support Fund (Becky’s Fund) in November 2006. In working with small non-profits over the last eight years, Lee has seen how often the problem of insufficient funding prevents domestic violence organizations from providing continuous support for battered women. Lee used the earnings from her third place finish on the reality television show Survivor: Cook Islands to create the organization.
The national campaign is meant to spread awareness of domestic violence on college campuses and to encourage college students to speak out against domestic violence in their communities. After stopping at Lafayette, the “Domestic Violence College Tour” will move on to Harvard University and the University of Pittsburgh in November.
