Walter “Bud” Scherr ’78 provides funding to aid in College development

Walter “Bud” Scherr ’78 has committed $1 million to the College to support the new strategic plan. While the gift has no specific stipulations, it is most likely that a portion of it will be directed toward engineering, as that was Scherr’s major when he was at Lafayette.

After graduating from Lafayette with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, Scherr worked in the business and banking industries. He spent several years working for Exxon Mobil and decided to combine his interests in business, engineering, and geology to create his own company, Valence Operating Co. Located in Kingwood, Texas, Valence drills wells for oil and natural gas.

John Leone, associate director for major gifts, says, “Bud is an energetic and personable individual who just loves Lafayette. He encompasses the entrepreneurial spirit that we would like to see in all our graduates.”

According to Leone, Scherr’s positive experience at Lafayette is one of the major reasons for giving back to the school. Leone says Scherr often speaks about the influence Guy Hovis, John H. Markle Professor of Geology, had on him and about his ongoing friendship with classmate and Trustee Harold Kamine ’78. Scherr would like to see a portion of the donation be used to acknowledge his friendship with Kamine somewhere on campus.
