Entire College community contributed to the food drive
With the help of students, faculty, staff, and friends, Lafayette Dining Services has collected over 500 pounds of nutritious meals and snacks for the children at St. Anthony’s Youth Center in Easton. The non-perishable food items were delivered to the center on Nov. 28.
The food drive was part of the annual Sodexho “Cans Across America” promotion, which involves college campuses across the United States in November. The objective of the event is to break the Guinness World Record for the most non-perishable food collected in a 24 hour period.
Though, according to Joseph A. Binotto, general manager of Dining Services, Lafayette decided to do things differently this year.
“Instead of concentrating on breaking a world record,” he says. “We focused on what really matters – helping those in the local community that are in need.”
The College ran its food drive for an entire week to benefit the after school program at St. Anthony’s. In addition to collection, Dining Services set up a display located in the Farinon College Center Food Court that contained items that could be purchased for donating to the cause.
“Many of these children in the program will not eat a single thing after they’ve had lunch at school,” says Binotto. “St. Anthony’s is a place where boys and girls can go after school that will provide healthy snacks and meals.”
