150 original Warhol pictures added to Lafayette permanent art collection
Lafayette has been selected by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts as one of 183 college and university art museums across the United States to receive a gift of original Warhol art.
Lafayette will receive approximately 100 original Polaroid pictures and 50 black and white prints selected by Jenny Moore, curator of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program. The College should receive the gift by the end of January.
The overall gift to educational institutions, made through the Photographic Legacy Program in honor of the foundation’s 20th anniversary, consists of 28,543 original Warhol photographs valued in excess of $28 million.
The gift includes both Polaroid color photographs and black and white pictures. Warhol presented the shots next to each other to gain different perspectives on the same person or event that he was capturing with film.
The program hopes that the gift will enable a wide range of people from communities across the country to view and study this relatively unknown area of Warhol’s work. By placing the Warhol works into the College’s permanent collection, the gift will enrich the breadth and depth of Lafayette’s holdings.
