English graduate received the Forward Poetry Prize
English graduate, poet, playwright, and fiction writer Anthony Caleshu ’92 will present a poetry reading at 4:10 p.m. Jan. 31 in Skillman Library, Gendebien Room.
The reading is being co-sponsored by the English department and the Friends of Skillman Library. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow his reading.
Caleshu published his first book of poems, The Siege of the Body and a Brief Respite, with Salt, the foremost British publisher of experimental poetry. He is also a winner of the Forward Poetry Prize. Launched out of the Forward Arts Foundation in 1991 to bring the public’s attention to contemporary poetry, the Forward Poetry Prizes are the richest annual awards in the United Kingdom with a total prize value of �16,000. Highly commended poems are published in the annual anthology, The Forward Book of Poetry.
Caleshu’s first play, “In the Bedroom” premiered in Galway, and his poems, stories, and criticism have appeared in a number of journals on both sides of the Atlantic, including Poetry Review (London), American Literary Review, The Dublin Review, and Poetry Ireland Review.
Originally from Massachusetts, Caleshu has lived and worked in Ireland since 1997 and now spends most of the year in Southwest England where he is a lecturer in English and creative writing at University of Plymouth.
