The Spot will feature dancing and other events
Lafayette students will have a new venue for late-night weekend dancing and other social activities beginning with the opening of the spring semester. It’s called “The Spot.”
Located in the former Jac & Co. building on North Third Street, at the base of College Hill, The Spot will complement the College’s existing social venues, giving students a new location for extracurricular life that encourages interaction among members of the campus community in a positive, safe environment.
Opening night, with dancing to a D.J. from New York City’s Webster Hall night club, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Students played a key role in planning and designing The Spot. The main space will include a dance floor, D.J. booth, sound and lighting systems, a bar area with a big-screen TV, and a kitchen. There will also be three game rooms, one with a pool table, one with electronic and table games and a TV, and one with a table for card games.
The main space and game rooms are on the first floor. The second floor has a lounge/dressing room for use by performers and a small office for personnel staffing The Spot.
On weekend nights when the College is in session during the fall and spring semesters, Lafayette’s Office of Student Life programs will run events at the venue. Each Friday there will be dancing, with music by professional and student D.J.s, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. On the first Saturday of each month, the Lafayette Activities Forum, a student organization, will sponsor events such as dances, musical performances, open mic nights, and theme parties from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Other student organizations will be invited to sponsor activities on the remaining Saturday nights each month when the College is session. Ideas for activities will be subject to approval by the Office of Student Life Programs, which will run those events as well.
Admission to The Spot will be restricted to Lafayette students, faculty, and staff and their guests. Each student, faculty member, or staff member may bring one guest per event. A mini-bus will provide transportation between campus and The Spot in a continuous loop.
Soft drinks and other beverages, as well as snacks, will be available free of charge. A selection of hot finger foods also will be available. The College is exploring the possibility of making beer and wine available on a limited basis to Lafayette students, faculty, and staff members who are age 21 and older.
Discussions about opening a new student social space have been under way at Lafayette for several years. In 2006, a committee appointed by the College’s Board of Trustees completed a comprehensive study of Lafayette students’ social patterns. After also studying student social spaces on other college campuses, the committee recommended that the College establish a venue for late-night dancing and other activities in the former Jac & Co. building, which Lafayette acquired in March 2006.
