Head of civil and environmental engineering to fill two-year council term
Roger Ruggles, associate professor and head of civil and environmental engineering, was appointed to Easton City Council on Jan. 9.
Ruggles’ appointment is for the unexpired term of two years left by Dan Cappora, who resigned from council to become a district magistrate.
“There are several issues facing the city at this point and I feel that addressing those issues are much more important than any individual initiatives that I might have,” says Ruggles.
In particular, Ruggles would like to focus on the current financial situation of the city. As there is a projected deficit for this year, he would like to see the situation come under control and to work to insure that no new taxes are required in next year’s budget.
Ruggles also hopes to focus on crime and economic development in Easton.
“The current levels of crime and gang activity in the city are a significant concern,” says Ruggles. “We need to develop programs and increase police presence in the neighborhoods to combat crime.”
Ruggles’ individual initiatives that he would like to address include vacant properties, the city’s infrastructure, and youth activities.
Ruggles is hoping to use his expertise on some of the environmental problems that the city faces, including flooding. He is currently working on the development of a plan for the new field house for youth sports at Heil Park and he has conducted traffic studies for the city in the past.
Ruggles would also like to work to bring the College and the city together to work on projects which concern both parties.
“I hope that I will be working on these types of projects since I feel that I understand the fundamental concerns for both parties,” says Ruggles. “Working together the city and the college achieve much more than working individually.”
