Nkrumah Pierre ’06, who recently was inducted into the United Way’s Young Leaders Group, invites members of the Lafayette community to attend its kickoff event 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick St. (at Laight St.). Tickets cost $125. Cocktails will be served.

The event will be hosted by Anne Craig, a reporter for the FOX 5 TV (WNYW) program Good Day New York. Kenya Hunt, Christopher Kromer, and Shirley Rumierk from NYCTV’s Cool in Your Code will appear.

Proceeds will benefit United Way’s Focus Forward after-school program, which helps at-risk high school students earn credits toward graduation through activities such as arts enrichment, personal development, and college and career exploration.

For more information, visit leadunited.org/youngleaders, email youngleaders@uwnyc.org, or call (212) 251-4074.

In an unrelated development, Pierre was quoted in an April 28 New York Times article about a protest against the acquittal of three New York City detectives in the shooting death of Sean Bell:

“But Nkrumah Pierre, a banker who lives on Long Island and who marched in the protest on Sunday, said: ‘We’ve progressed to the point where we don’t need to act out in violence. This is an intelligent protest, and a strategic protest.’”
