He worked with Professor Yih-Choung Yu on how diseases affect the human respiratory system
Electrical and computer engineering major Kavinda Udugama ’09 (Kandy, Sri Lanka) presented his EXCEL research at the Biomedical Engineering Society’s annual fall meeting held Oct. 2 – 4 in St. Louis, Mo.
This three-day conference showcased more than 600 presentations and was host to approximately 2,400 participants from around the world. The presenters represented a wide variety of practicing engineers from biomedical, electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering fields, as well as medical specialists.
Udugama’s paper entitled “Parameter Estimation of Respiratory Impedance in Continuous-Time Domain” was completed under the guidance of Yih-Choung Yu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. “The main objective of this study is to be able to identify what sort of changes there are in the human respiratory system for different diseases,” says Udugama.
“At the conference, I was able to find out more about the area of my research and what other graduate students and faculty have been studying. I was also able to sit in on sessions that focused on some of the new cutting-edge techniques used for treatment of diseases.”
Udugama appreciates the diverse nature of the engineering field and the opportunity Lafayette provides him to explore the biomedical branch in-depth. “While receiving exposure to new developments, I have been able to gain an idea of what I would like to pursue in graduate school,” he says. “I was able to see if respiratory engineering is an area which I could further myself in or whether I should use the skills I currently have to pursue a different avenue.”
