Lafayette offers its students numerous opportunities; among them is the chance to participate in Division I sports and perform an honors research project. Students who decide to do an honors project are individually guided by a faculty member. In many cases, the student has worked previously with the faculty member on an EXCEL Scholars research project or completed an independent study.
This year, 10 senior student-athletes are working on honors projects in a wide range of majors.
Biology majors Hannah Fink (Whitehall, Pa.), who is a goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team; John Griffith (Franklin, Mass.), who is a defender on the men’s soccer team; and Steven Melnic (Allentown, Pa.), who is part of the golfing squad, are participating in honors research.
Biochemistry majors Jennifer Czochor (Boothwyn, Pa.), who is on the swimming and diving team, and Sarah Sykes (West Grove, Pa.), a tennis player, are working on projects in their fields.
Other athletes working on research are: baseball player Ryan Hanna (Tucson, Ariz.), a double major in English and Spanish; tennis player Nancy Parker (Mystic, Conn.), a geology major; swimmer Amanda Curley (Leonia, N.J.), a history and government and law major; and softball players Emma Kline (New Hope, Pa.), a double major in international affairs and German, and Sara Bussiere (Wilmington, Del.), a government and law major.
