Vice President-elect Joe Biden announced Dec. 30 that Alan Hoffman ’88, his chief operating officer on the Obama-Biden Transition Team, will serve as his deputy chief of staff in the Obama-Biden administration.
“Alan Hoffman has been an invaluable adviser to me for over a decade,” stated Biden in a press release. “He will bring sound judgment and key management experience to the office.”
An American studies graduate, Hoffman served from 1998-2003 and from 2006-08 as chief of staff to Biden, Delaware’s senior senator, directing the legislative agenda, communications strategy, political operations, and office management. Prior to joining the transition team, he was senior vice president for external relations in the University of California system. From 2004-06, he was vice president for external affairs for the RAND Corporation. Prior to that, he served as vice president in the Washington offices of Timmons & Co., a consulting and lobbying firm.
In the mid-1990s, Hoffman served in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as special assistant to the assistant secretary for legislative affairs; in the U.S. Department of Justice as special counsel to the assistant attorney general for legislative affairs; and then as an assistant United States attorney in Philadelphia prosecuting federal crimes for the Justice Department. His previous experience includes service in the White House as a staff member on the President’s Task Force on National Health Care Reform and as a special assistant to Hillary Rodham Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign and transition.
