Annual festival represents highest level of achievement in state
Sara Walter ’09 (Kempton, Pa.), Bill Stevenson ’10 (Burlington, Conn.), and Peter McGrath ’11 (Burtonsville, Md.) were selected to represent Lafayette in the 2009 Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival held at Allegheny College in March.
Walter, a history & government and law and Spanish double major, will perform on the clarinet; Stevenson, a chemical engineering major, will perform on the alto saxophone; and McGrath, a mathematics major, will play the trumpet.
According to James Moyer, associate professor of music and director of bands, this is the highest number of Lafayette students selected for this statewide honor. The college has had a total of nine students selected since 2004.
“The very best wind and percussion students are selected from 25-30 college music programs each year for this fantastic band,” says Moyer. “This is the oldest such organization of its type in the U.S. and it will be, for many of these students, the very best band they will ever perform in.”
The students will travel with Moyer for the three day festival for rehearsal and a concert as part of the 118 member band. This year’s conductor is Colonel Timothy Foley, the retired director of the internationally-acclaimed United States Marine Band
