Chemistry major Shannon Kleinbach ’09 (Perkiomenville, Pa.) will present research on the reactivity of chemical compounds at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society held in March in Salt Lake City, Utah.
This conference is expected to attract more than 10,000 chemists, chemical engineers, academicians, undergraduate and graduate students, and other related professionals. Although there is a special section reserved for presentations by undergraduates, Kleinbach will be presenting her work during the meeting’s main inorganic chemistry session.
Kleinbach worked with Chip Nataro, associate professor of chemistry, trying to synthesize new compounds that can be used as electrochemical catalysts. “Hands-on experience in the lab has had a great impact on my understanding of material that I have learned in most of my chemistry classes,” she says.
Kleinbach plans to continue her education in graduate school by pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry. “The experience of doing research with Dr. Nataro has changed my outlook on working in the field of chemistry,” Kleinbach says. “If I had not worked on research over the summer and continued into the school year, I do not think I would have chosen to pursue a master’s degree.”
Nataro agrees that the research experience has broadened Kleinbach’s outlook.
“What she needs now is to learn how to communicate her results to the greater scientific community and to discover all of the different types of exciting research being conducted in labs around the world. This trip will be a tremendous learning experience for Shannon,” Nataro says.
