Five Lafayette students took individual golds at the 2009 Pennsylvania Forensics Association’s state tournament. The team is now preparing to compete in the National Forensics Association’s national tournament next month.
Joe Dudek ’09 (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), a double major in mathematics and philosophy, was state champion in debate, repeating his championship of last year.
Rachel Heron ’09 (Downingtown, Pa.), a double major in English and geology, took first in dramatic interpretation and in dramatic duo interpretation, along with her partner Daniel Ricken ’12 (Woodbury, N.Y.). Kyle deCant ’10 (Orange, Conn.), a double major in philosophy and government & law, placed first in impromptu speaking, and Teevrat Garg ’10 (Haryana, India), a double major in mathematics and economics, took first place in extemporaneous speaking.
Garg also placed second in persuasive speaking, which won him a spot on Pennsylvania’s team at the Interstate Oratorical Association’s annual tournament.
The team placed second in the state test, where the competition included the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, St. Joseph’s, and the host school, Cedar Crest, among others. The NFA nationals will be held April 16-20 at Missouri State University. The Forensics Society is coached by Scott Placke, director of forensics, and John Boyer, director of debate and assistant director of forensics.
