Activities include sustainability discussions, an Earth Day celebration, a photo contest, and an environmental student research display
Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP) invites all members of the campus community to get involved in this year’s Earth Week celebration April 17-23.
According to LEAP president Jennifer Bell ’11 (Purcellville, Va.), the theme for the week is embracing all aspects of the earth. “It’s not just about the environment, the animals, and trees, but also about embracing the diversity of people that live on the planet,” she says. Events include discussions with sustainability experts, an Earth Day celebration, a photo contest, and an environmental student research display.
“LEAP plans these events in hopes of creating student awareness for environmental causes, but also our own campus sustainability efforts,” says Bell. “We have a lot of exciting projects such as the organic gardening at Metzgar fields and food-waste composting projects. We hope that students realize what sorts of sustainability projects we’re working on, but also we hope to show students that being ‘green’ is also about having fun and appreciating the beautiful planet we live on.”
Presenting the week’s keynote address will be Kate Sheppard, political reporter for the environmental news publication Grist Magazine. She will discuss how United States legislators are shaping the country’s environmental policy at noon on April 17 in Hugel Science Center room 103.
There will also be a discussion focusing on environmental issues through different religious perspectives at 6 p.m. April 20 in Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104. Speakers include John Colatch, director of religious life and College chaplain; Daniel Swartz, environmental activist, author, and Rabbi of Temple Hesed in Scranton; and Herman Tull, visiting professor of religious studies at Princeton University.

Earth Week Schedule:
April 17, Keynote Speaker: Kate Sheppard at noon in Hugel room 103.
April 18, (Deadline for submissions), LEAP Photo Contest – submit photos that spotlight the natural environment, such as wildlife or the landscape. The top 12 photos will be featured in a 2010 calendar.
April 20, Environment and religion discussion featuring Rev. John Colatch, Rabbi Daniel Swartz, and Professor Herman Tull at 6 p.m. in Kirby room 104.
April 22, Environmental poster display at noon in Farinon College Center – students will present environmentally-themed research they have been performing on campus.
April 22, Earth Day Celebration at 4 p.m. on the Quad (Rain Date: April 23) – there will be a solar panel display, compost display, crafts, Frisbee, volleyball, and snacks.
April 23, Movie Night: Planet Earth at 9 p.m. in Farinon’s Landis Atrium.
