Easton Farmers’ Market opens for the season May 2
The Easton Farmers’ Market, America’s oldest continuously operating open-air farmers’ market, kicks off its 257th season at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 2, in Easton’s Centre Square.
Opening day festivities include a 9 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Pennsylvania State Representative Robert Freeman and Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. There also will be live music, prize drawings, an agriculture trivia contest, children’s activities, and free market bags for the first 50 customers.
This season, the market is welcoming eight new vendors as well as featuring new locally-grown or handcrafted products. In addition to fresh produce the market includes pastured eggs and meat, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, artisan breads and pastries, local wine, Amish baked goods, honey, herbs, salsa, jams, Pennsylvania maple syrup, bedding plants, fresh-cut flowers, Alpaca fiber and apparel, hand-dyed yarn, handmade soaps, and fine arts and crafts.
New this year will be a market trolley beginning June 6. The 26 passenger trolley, will service residents of College Hill and Forks Township and run every Saturday from 8:30a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost will be $1 roundtrip. The trolley is sponsored by the Nurture Nature Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
The Easton Farmers’ Market, established in 1752, the year of the City’s founding, remains a rich and colorful piece of Easton’s heritage. It has been located in Center Square for all of its 257 years. The market is open Saturdays 9a.m. – 1p.m. through Oct. 31.
Other events in May will include: a Mother’s Day tea party on May 9, a kids’ farm day on May 16, and a composting day on May 30.
