Up For Debate is a compilation of position papers from students across the country
Sam Derrick ’10 (Etters, Pa.), Elizabeth Wehler ’09, and Teevrat Garg ’10 (Haryana, India) have contributed chapters to a new book exploring possible changes in U.S. foreign policy focusing on the Greater Horn of Africa.
The book, Up For Debate: U.S. Foreign Policy Towards the Greater Horn of Africa, was published in April by Picket Fence Memories. It is a compilation of position papers from students across the country who debated the topic during the 2007-2008 academic year in the National Forensics Association Lincoln-Douglas debates. The book is edited by Danny Cantrell, assistant director of forensics at Cerritos College in California, and Brandy Brickey, former director of forensics at University of California, San Diego.
Derrick, Wehler, and Garg are members of the Lafayette Forensics Society’s national championship team. John Boyer, director of debate and assistant director of forensics, assisted the students with their research and papers.
Derrick, an economics and business major, wrote about the need for ready-to-use food aid and how malnutrition can be reduced in the Greater Horn. Wehler, who graduated May 23 with an A.B. with majors in mathematics and economics & business, wrote about how U.S. cotton subsidies are affecting the markets in the Greater Horn and how a change in U.S. farm policy could invigorate the farming sector in the Greater Horn. Garg, who is pursuing a B.S. in mathematics and an A.B. with a major in economics and business, wrote about how including agricultural products in the African Growth and Opportunity Act would substantially improve the economy in the Greater Horn of Africa.
In May, the Forensics Society’s speech team took first place among 35 teams in Division III of The National Forensics Association’s National Tournament, defeating schools such as New York University, University of California-Los Angeles, and Florida State. The debate team finished fifth at the tournament.
