Kyle deCant ’10, Teevrat Garg ’10, and Samantha Sangenito ’12 are named state champions
Three Lafayette students took individual gold medals at the 2010 Pennsylvania Forensics Association’s state tournament held at California University of Pennsylvania.
The team is now preparing to compete in the National Forensics Association’s 2010 national tournament April 15-19 at Ohio University. Lafayette’s speech team is the reigning Division III national champion. The students beat out teams from 35 colleges and universities from across the country in last year’s tournament.
Kyle deCant ’10 (Orange, Conn.), a double major in philosophy and government & law, placed second overall in the state tournament and was named state champion in extemporaneous speaking. His speech about increasing suicide rates in the United States military and potential changes to military policy regarding mental health issues also took second in persuasive speaking. This won him a spot on Pennsylvania’s team at the Interstate Oratorical Association’s annual tournament April 24-25 at University of Oklahoma.
Teevrat Garg ’10 (Haryana, India), who is pursuing a B.S. in mathematics and an A.B. with a major in economics and business, was named state champion in impromptu speaking. Samantha Sangenito ’12 (Glen Cove, N.Y.), a government and law major, took first place in informative speaking with her speech on the role of women in the United States military.
The Forensics Society is coached by Scott Placke, director of forensics, and John Boyer, director of debate and assistant director of forensics.
