Nandini Sikand, who is joining the faculty in the fall as an instructor of film and media studies, is showing her film Soma Girls at 5 p.m. June 18 and 3:15 p.m. June 19 at the Southside Film Festival in Bethlehem. Both showings will be at the Victory Firehouse on Weber Street and East Second Avenue.
The film explores the lives of 30 girls ranging from 6-17 years old growing up in a hostel in Kolkata, India, who are attempting to overcome the circumstances they have been born into and lead ordinary lives.
An award-winning, New York-based independent filmmaker and television producer, Sikand has taken a tenure-track position in the College’s new program in film and media studies.
Sikand’s other films–The Bhangra Wrap (1995), Don’t Fence Me In (1998), Amazonia (2001) and In Whose Name? (2004)–have been screened at over 100 domestic and international film festivals. In television, she has worked on projects for Channel Four: UK, Rainbow Programming, Ovation: the Arts Network, HBO, Oxygen Media, and The History Channel. She has been awarded grants for her films by The Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.
