James O’Connell ’12, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Saturday, June 26, after being hit by a car on the highway. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Westwood United Methodist Church, 10497 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. A campus memorial service will be held in early September.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Jamie O’Connell Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be made in the name of Lafayette College, with Jamie O’Connell Scholarship Fund in the notation line, and sent to: Jamie O’Connell Memorial Scholarship, 307 Markle Hall, Lafayette College, Easton, Pa 18042.

President Daniel H. Weiss released the following statement through an email to the College community:

I am deeply saddened to report the death of James O’Connell, a member of the Class of 2012. Jamie was struck and killed Saturday while he was walking along a freeway not far from his home in Los Angeles.

My thoughts are with his family and with our community. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and heartfelt condolences to all those who knew Jamie on the loss that we have experienced.

Information will follow as it becomes available on plans for services in Jamie’s home area and for a campus service to celebrate his life.
