Through the Landis Community Outreach Center’s Journey Home program, Lafayette students and female inmates from Northampton County Prison held an informal discussion group and put the finishing touches on a rug made of recycled Lafayette T-shirts. The activity was held at Landis’ new Center for Public Dialogue and Conversation on North Second Street.
Journey Home is currently comprised of 25 student volunteers, who help provide tutoring, job skills training, and social/therapy activities.
“With this program, we try to break down stereotypes and show that these women are more than just the mistake they made,” says Bonnie Winfield, director of the Landis Center. “Both the students and the women learn from each other and find out about many things they do and do not have in common.”
The rug was made by Easton-based textile artist Susan Huxley, who creates most of her artwork using recycled materials.
