Campus Will Fight Hunger and Homelessness Nov. 12-19

Students, faculty, and staff will take part in the fight against poverty in America and around the world during the College’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week activities Nov. 12-19.

The activities, which are organized by the Landis Community Outreach Center, will include students sleeping outside in a hut on the Quad, making and delivering sandwiches to homeless people in Philadelphia, fasting for 30 hours, and answering trivia questions online to earn rice for hungry people in Third World countries.

“Landis participates in the national Hunger and Homelessness Week in order to raise awareness of these devastating issues that affect millions of people worldwide,” says organizer Julie Pollack ’11 (Scarsdale, N.Y.), a psychology and anthropology & sociology double major. “We have a variety of events to draw students’ attention to these social issues and to introduce them to ways to volunteer and become active members of the Easton community.”

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Events:

• Nov. 12-13, noon-noon, the Quad: Hut-a-thon- Student groups will donate $20 to spend an hour living outside in a hut. Proceeds go to Safe Harbor and Third Street Alliance shelters in Easton.
• Nov. 13, 4-6 p.m. and 7 p.m.-midnight, Farinon College Center: Midnight Run- Student volunteers will make sandwiches to be delivered to homeless people in Philadelphia.
• Nov. 16, 6 p.m., Marlo Room: Oxfam Hunger Banquet- Students will learn about world hunger through this interactive dinner.
• Nov. 17-18, noon-6 p.m.: 30-Hour Famine- The cost of missed meals will be donated to fight world hunger.
• Nov. 18, 4 p.m., meet at Landis Center: Tour of Easton given by a former homeless person. Students will learn about the city from a different perspective.
• Nov. 19, noon, Interfaith Chapel: Faces of Homelessness lecture- Students will hear the trials, tribulations, and inspirational stories from past and present residents of homeless shelters in Easton.
• All Week: Students are encouraged to visit freerice.com, a nonprofit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. Answering trivia questions will result in rice being donated to Third World countries.
• All Week: Helping Hands-Donate Flex Dollars or cans at any dining hall.
