The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company will perform 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Williams Center for the Arts.
Tickets are free for Lafayette students, $6 for students at LVAIC schools, $5 for faculty and staff, and $20 for the public. They can be obtained by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009. Audience members are welcome to stay for a post-performance discussion with Lar Lubovitch. The final performance in this year’s Footlights series will be Viver Brasil: Feet on the Ground on March 24.
One of America’s most imaginative and prolific choreographers of Broadway and international ballet, Lar Lubovitch underscores his artistic range and audience appeal with a performance representing three divergent musical genres–the lush romanticism of Johannes Brahms, the iconic minimalism of Philip Glass, and the sizzling jazz of John Coltrane. His popularity with diverse audiences is described by choreographer and critic, Gus Solomons Jr., as “gracious, musically coherent, spatially fluid, and emotionally accessible.” The New York Post wrote, “Lubovitch turns out fluid, balletic moves like water from a spigot.”
In his most recent work, Legend of Ten, his dancers work in the complex terrain of Johannes Brahms’ powerful Piano Quintet (first and fourth movements). Lubovitch then shifts gears with his 1978 masterpiece, North Star, working within the kinetic scope of Glass’ experimental score described by the Boston Globe as “trance-inducing aesthetic at its purest and most satisfying.” Completing the program is Lubovitch’s new dance set to a rare recording of Favorite Things performed live by Coltrane’s quintet in Copenhagen in 1963. Creating a stimulating visual counterpart to Lubovitch’s jazz interpretation is a visual backdrop that reproduces Jackson Pollock’s action painting, Autumn Rhythm.
As a special residency outreach activity and prelude to the performance, two dancers from the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company will travel to the Lehigh Valley Performing Arts Charter High School in Bethlehem on Feb. 2 to teach a masters class for dance students at noon.
