Saxophone Summit will present an evening of John Coltrane’s jazz 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Williams Center for the Arts.
Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, and Ravi Coltrane’s recent release, Seraphic Light, marks a bold new beginning for Saxophone Summit following the untimely death of original member Michael Brecker in 2007. The sax trio appears at Lafayette with long-time collaborators Phil Markowitz on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums.
Saxophone Summit became a jazz sensation in 2004 when Lovano, Liebman, and Brecker pooled their prodigious gifts to celebrate the great era of John Coltrane’s most pioneering and progressive music-making. Their 2004 debut album, Gathering of Spirits, was deemed “ridiculously good” by Jazz Times. Amazon’s jazz guide said the recording “invoked the vision and apocalyptic energies of Coltrane’s 1960s meetings with Eric Dolphy and Pharoah Sanders.” Following Brecker’s death, Ravi Coltrane joined the group in 2007, bringing his father’s musical birthright into perfect union with Lovano and Liebman.
Tickets are free for Lafayette students, $6 for students at LVAIC schools, $5 for faculty and staff, and $22 for the public. The final performance in the 2010-11 Jazz Masters Series will be the Kenny Werner Quintet with special guests David Sanchez and Randy Brecker on March 8. This year’s series is supported by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
