The newly formed Contemporary Music Ensemble presents the New Music Lafayette concert 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Williams Center for the Arts.
The elite chamber group performs music composed in the 20th and 21st centuries by established masters, emerging composers, and students. The group is directed by Kirk O’Riordan, assistant professor of music and director of bands
This is the ensemble’s first full performance, and it features world premieres of three works—two by students and one by the director: Theme and Variation by math major Gavin Hobbs ’12 (Pen Argyl, Pa.); a piano quartet by computer science major Haruki Yamaguchi ’11 (Akashi, Japan); and Mantra by O’Riordan.
In addition, clarinetist Michael Pinkard ’14 (Puyallup, Wash.), a physics major, joins pianist Anna Maria Marzullo, instructor of music, to perform a piece by contemporary American composer Robert Muczynski, and violist Megan Myron ’14 (Scarsdale, N.Y.), a music major, will perform a work by composer Kenji Bunch.
The concert concludes with a performance of three movements from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Aus den seiben Tagen (From the Seven Days). Joining the ensemble for this performance will be dancer Carrie Rohman, assistant professor of English.
