The Viver Brasil dance company will perform Feet on the Ground 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24 in the Williams Center for the Arts.
Viver Brasil will take the audience on an inspiring cultural journey through Brazil, featuring a dazzling program of African orixás (deities), ceremonial celebrations, the Brazilian martial arts/dance form of capoeira, and Carnival. The performance showcases exhilarating Afro-Brazilian traditional and contemporary movement, stunning costumes, and pulsating percussion and voice.
The award-winning dance company was co-founded in 1997 by Linda Yudin and Luiz Badaró, and is rooted in the traditional and contemporary forms and techniques of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The company is committed to increasing awareness of the rich history of Afro-Brazilian dance and music through education programs, performances, and residencies. A free Samba workshop will be held 1:30 p.m. in the Williams Center. Samba is the national dance (and music) of Brazil, originating with the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of the Salvador/Bahia region of Brazil.
Tickets are free for Lafayette students, $6 for students at LVAIC schools, $5 for faculty and staff, and $22 for the public. They can be obtained by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009. This performance is part of the 2011 International Students’ Association Extravaganza.
