Lafayette honored more than 120 students for academic excellence at the annual All-College Honors Convocation May 1, in the Williams Center for the Arts. Awards and prizes recognized outstanding academic success in all four of Lafayette’s academic divisions–engineering, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
This spring, 46 students will join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Outstanding students from all curricula are eligible for election as juniors or seniors.
President Daniel H. Weiss, Provost Wendy L. Hill, Robert W. Allan, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and associate professor of psychology, and Hannah W. Stewart-Gambino, dean of the College, offered remarks. Members of the Academic Progress Committee Olga A. Duhl, professor of foreign languages and literatures, and Robert I. Weiner, Jones Professor of History, awarded prizes.
The keynote speaker was Christine Thomas ’01, assistant professor of chemistry at Brandeis University. Since 2008, she has focused her research on synthetic inorganic and organometallic chemistry. She has published eight manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and in 2010 was awarded an Early Career Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. Christine was recently awarded a prestigious 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in recognition of her distinguished performance and potential to make substantial contributions in her field.
Thomas received a B.S. in chemistry at Lafayette where she worked with Chip Nataro, associate professor of chemistry, on the synthesis and electrochemistry of inorganic complexes. She earned her doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry at the California Institute of Technology in 2006 and went on to pursue postdoctoral research in the areas of bioinorganic and computational chemistry at Texas A&M University.
(Note: Marquis Scholars and Trustee Scholarship recipients, selected from among Lafayette’s most promising applicants, receive a special merit-based financial award and educational benefits. In the EXCEL Scholars program, students do collaborative research with faculty while earning a stipend.)
