Lafayette’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were recognized last week by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) for academic achievement during the 2010-11 season. Each squad garnered Scholar All-America status from the organization, posting grade-point averages above 3.0.
“I’m excited for our student-athletes to be recognized for their outstanding academic achievement by a national organization,” says head coach Jim Dailey. “They work extremely hard, balancing their academic and athletic commitments.”
The Leopard men earned a 3.38 team GPA, ranking fourth nationally among Division I institutions and topping the Patriot League. On the women’s side, Lafayette posted a 3.41 team mark, tying them for 29th in the nation. Only two other Patriot League schools, Bucknell and Colgate, had both their men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams acknowledged.
“Lafayette is a special school where student-athletes can excel in academics and athletics, without sacrificing one for the sake of the other,” adds Dailey. “At a primarily academic institution, it is difficult to balance the athletic responsibility. On the other hand, at an institution that focuses more on athletics, a student-athlete may pay less attention to his or her education. In swimming and diving, there needs to be a balance.”
Combined, the men’s and women’s overall GPA was 3.395, good for sixth in the country. The women’s team has been named to the CSCAA Academic All American list 37 of the last 38 semesters, while the men have made the list 30 times during that period.
