Strong Results: More Than 80 Students Present Research from Summer Projects

Earlier this month, more than 80 students from all four of the College’s academic divisions presented the results of their summer research projects at a poster session hosted by the Academic Research Committee.

Through the EXCEL Scholars program and honors and independent study programs, students in virtually any major are able to work one-on-one with faculty on high-level research. Approximately 140 students each summer and over 100 students each academic year serve as EXCEL Scholars, a unique program in which students earn a stipend while working collaboratively with faculty.

Students routinely work on projects that result in conference presentations, peer-reviewed journal publications, national scholarships and fellowships, and acceptance into some of the country’s top graduate programs.

Chemical engineering major Aaditya Khanal ’12 presented research on the production of biofuel from algae with Javad Tavakoli, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.
Geology major Brian Scott '12, left, discussed research he performed on the thermal expansion of minerals with Guy Hovis, John Markle Professor of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.
Neuroscience major Chris Angeloni ’12 presented research on a brain-computer interface project headed by Lisa Gabel, assistant professor of psychology, and Yih-Choung Yu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
Mechanical engineering major Dena Inqui '13 worked with Robert Root, professor of mathematics, on how fish and other vertebrates developed backbones.
Biology major Dyana Picache ’12 presented research she performed with Laurie Caslake, associate professor and head of biology, on the ability of bacteria-treated sand to withstand earthquakes.
Civil engineering major Janka Lovering '13 worked with David Veshosky, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, on the sustainable re-population and development of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward.
History major Jonathan Dever '13, left, presented research he performed with Paul Barclay, associate professor of history, on the visual culture of Japan during World War II.
Mechanical engineering major Katheryn Yoder '13 performed an analysis of how panel zones help steel frames stand up to seismic conditions with Anne Raich, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering.
English major Lauren Scott '12 presented research she did with Chris Phillips, assistant professor of English, for a book he is writing on early American hymns.
Katalin Fabian, associate professor of government and law, left, and Lindsey Ryan '12, a government and law major, presented research on Eastern European resistance to passing domestic violence legislation.
Civil engineering major Rebecca Citrin '14 researched the effects of wastewater treatment on nutrient levels in the Bushkill Creek with Art Kney, associate professor and head of civil and environmental engineering.
Kathryn Panto ’12, who has a self-designed major in media and communications, worked on an ongoing project where students mix art and computer science with biology and neuroscience to create artwork.
