Madeline Laskoski ’13, left, with Claudine Lilien ’90 at Fox headquarters in New York City
This summer, Madeline Laskoski ’13 and Carolyn Madaras ’12 got a new perspective on the entertainment industry while interning for Fox Entertainment Group in New York City.
The students previously participated in an externship in January with Claudine Lilien ’90, Fox’s senior vice president of cross divisional integrated sales and marketing for news corporation. That experience led them to be accepted to the Fox Internship Program.
“As you could imagine, a lot more people apply than can be accepted, so it is quite an accomplishment for both of them to be a part of the program,” says Lilien.
Laskoski (Goshen, N.Y.), a double major in English and government & law, primarily worked with Fox Cable.
“On my floor we dealt with ad sales for FX, Fox Soccer Channel, Fuel, Speed, Fox Sports, and National Geographic,” she explains. “I was assigned to pricing and planning for all of Fox Sports. My boss was the executive V.P. of pricing and planning, and he allowed me to sit in on all of his meetings and taught me about the business.”
Laskoski spent the first half of her day in the pricing and planning division, looking through program schedules for the upcoming quarter, detecting oversell and available ad space, and making sure that all of the sales are making a profit. She also worked in a group with five other interns to build a marketing strategy for the iPad 2.
“The ultimate goal was to build a presentation that will make Apple want to buy advertising space on any of Fox’s television networks,” says Laskoski. “This was the time that I could be creative and gain hands-on skills in research, marketing, pricing and planning, sales, group collaboration, and public speaking.”
Madaras (Hackettstown, N.J.), a government & law major, worked as an advertisement sales intern. “This internship was a great way to learn about the different opportunities within advertising sales and to network with individuals in the business.”
They were also part of a program where Fox executives came to speak about their career path and responsibilities with the company.
“It was interesting to learn about how these top executives got to where they are today. They also had really great advice on how to successfully enter the media industry,” Laskoski says.
Lilien, who graduated as a history major, didn’t know exactly what she wanted to do after graduating. “I was a big fan of shows that aired on Fox at the time and thought that it could be a ‘dream’ job,” she says. “I became interested in the idea of selling advertising time and my career path eventually took me down the road of sales and integrated marketing.”
For new college graduates, Lilien has the following advice: “Don’t stress. You will get a job. Speak with many people in different fields. Keep in touch with people as you meet them. The most important thing I did was to network with people.”
After she graduates, Laskoski hopes to get a job in the media industry with a focus on politics. “I have always been interested in broadcast journalism and production, but my internship has taught me that there are such a wide variety of jobs within media that I do not want to limit myself,” she says.
Madaras would like to work as an account executive for a network or go to law school to study entertainment law. “This internship has been amazing because it has given me the chance to get experience with the current number one rated network on the air,” she says. “Whichever direction I go after I graduate, I know that this internship has been significantly helpful to me.”
