Lafayette honored more than 120 students for academic excellence at the annual All-College Honors Convocation April 29 in Colton Chapel. Awards and prizes recognized outstanding academic success in all four of Lafayette’s academic divisions—engineering, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
This spring, 47 students will join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Outstanding students are eligible for election as juniors or seniors.
President Daniel H. Weiss, Provost Wendy Hill, Jorge Torres, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and associate professor of music, and Hannah Stewart-Gambino, dean of the College, offered remarks. Members of the Academic Progress Committee Ingrid Furniss, assistant professor of art, and Evan Fisher, professor of mathematics, awarded prizes.
The keynote speaker was Berrisford Boothe ’83, associate professor of art at Lehigh University. Boothe received his M.F.A from The Maryland Institute College of Art where he won the Walter’s Museum Travelling Fellowship. A founding member of Lehigh’s integrated Product Design cross-disciplinary curriculum, Boothe has been an established presence in the art scene for over 20 years. He is represented by the June Kelly Gallery, NYC, and his career involves work as a painter, digital artist, printmaker, photographer, installation artist, lecturer, and curator.
With 14 solo exhibitions to date, he has participated in over 70 group exhibitions and his works are in collections public and private in the U.S., South America, and the U.K. A former Pennsylvania Council of the Arts member, he remains an active Lafayette alumnus, participating in Lafayette Leadership Conferences and serving on the McDonogh Committee. Boothe’s work has been presented in various print media including Art News, Collecting African American Art, and Creative Spirituality: The Way of the Artist.
(Note: Marquis Scholars and Trustee Scholarship recipients, selected from among Lafayette’s most promising applicants, receive a special merit-based financial award and educational benefits. In the EXCEL Scholars program, students do collaborative research with faculty while earning a stipend.)
