Laf360 is a comprehensive initiative to connect students’ daily lives in ways that increase academic success, enhance a sense of individual fulfillment, provide for a rich social life full of tradition and connection to the College, and promote active participation in a community of values.
The goal of this initiative is to support the full four-year arc of each student’s enrollment and to foster tighter integration among all phases of the undergraduate experience, from academics and residence life to co-curricular initiatives and community service. In so doing, each student will experience a deeper sense of identity as a member of her/his class and the larger community.

Notice that the spokesmen at the outset are indeed men, white men (and who are they, I saw only one faculty member in the video and only a glimpse). Notice also that no African American has a speaking role in the video (though we have the usual pictures of them entertaining or in the background). And notice that the first living group alternatives mentioned are fraternities and sororities. LAF 360 indeed.
No evident gays or lesbians either. It would be astonishing were it not put together by Lafayette College. It is thus quite predictable, sadly — tragically in 2013. How could it be that an institution with such enormous resources and potential for greatness repeatedly, and with ghastly absences of imagination and fluency fail and fall simply because it just cannot perceive a world as having evolved beyond 1955? Unbelievable.
Prof. Panichas – One of the men is Michael Prisco the current student government President, who I hope you at least recognize. Another is the Trustee representative to the initiative.
In terms of faculty involvement, the initiative is chaired by the Dean of the College and the subcommittees are all co-chaired by faculty members. Details at the link in the website link of my comment.
What would you like to see happen differently with Laf360?
Mr. Riley – There were gay and lesbian participants at the Laf360 kickoff meeting hosted over winter break. How exactly do you propose we make this “evident” in a 2 minute video given that I only know this because I attended and previously listened to those folks speak separately about their sexuality?
As a member of the steering committee, I’d like to hear your suggestions especially since we have a senior faculty member and trustee emeritus (former vice-chair of the board as well) raising concerns. Please post them here or e-mail me at michael.s.delisi@gmail.com.
