Lafayette celebrated National Poetry Month in April with poetry readings, lectures, and sessions recognizing the winners of the College’s annual poetry competitions.

The winner of the MacKnight Black Competition is Rachel LeWitt ’13 (Berwyn, Pa.), a double major in psychology and English, for her poem “Forests for the Trees.” English major Alexandra Von Arx ’13 (Little Silver, N.J.) received an honorable mention for “Almost Famous.” The contest was judged by the poet Michael Dickman, who, along with LeWitt and Von Arx, gave a poetry reading on April 10.
The winner of the Jean Corrie Poetry Competition is Lindsey Dier ’14 (New York, N.Y.), a double major in English and film & media studies, for her poem “Unscripted.” English major Victoria Walters ’14 (East Northport, N.Y.) received honorable mention for her poem “Tear.” The competition was judged by poet Katherine Bogden ’06, who read her work with Dier and Walters April 25.
Open to seniors, the MacKnight competition is named for MacKnight Black ’16, who at the time of his death in 1931 was one of America’s most significant poets. The Corrie competition includes entries from first-year students, sophomores, and juniors and is supported by the Academy of American Poets. Both competitions are sponsored by the English Department.
