Hugh Harris Recognized for Many Years of Service

Hugh Harris, who is retiring as director of public safety, was recognized at Lafayette’s annual pre-Commencement reception, dinner, and awards ceremony. Read his citation below.

You were appointed public safety director 31 years ago this month and immediately had an impact on the quality of campus life.  Your department’s accomplishments during your first year were so noteworthy that you were commended in writing for making “giant strides”—an equally apt description of your subsequent successes.

As director you embodied the highest standards of integrity and fairness, and you required that those standards be met by your staff.  You also valued professional development and set an outstanding example by regularly updating your own knowledge and skills.

You restructured the department to heighten its efficiency and significantly broadened its reach—and outreach.  The partnership you developed with Easton’s emergency-services departments was truly exemplary, as was reflected in the commendation you recently received from the city highlighting your leadership and service as a great benefit to Easton and the community as well as to Lafayette.

Despite the complex challenges of being the chief security officer at an undergraduate institution, you have said that the students are what you will miss the most when you retire.  You have earned their respect by being reasonable and approachable and by working to educate them about new policies designed to give them a safer and more positive college experience.

Hugh, your dedication, professionalism, and friendliness have earned you the admiration of the grown-ups on campus, as well. You have been a steady and reassuring presence among us during times of difficulty and disruption—and a proud participant when we have had reasons to celebrate.  We acknowledge your service with our heartfelt appreciation and applause.
