With less than two weeks to reach the alumni participation goal of 40%, a gift from the College’s oldest alumnus, Howard C. Lindemann ’32, arrived!

The gift was received just a few days prior to his 102nd birthday on June 23. In the hand-written note accompanying his check, he said: “Greetings from the 100th graduating class (1932). I am living at an assisted living facility (Heath Village) in Hackettstown, N.J. I am well and send my congratulations to the Class of 2013.”
Meanwhile, the Class of 2008—the youngest reunion class—is striving to beat the young alumni participation record of 47% held by the Class of 2007. With 245 donors so far, the class has reached 43.3% participation.
Many contributions have been received this year from alumni who give regularly as well as those who are pitching in to help reach the 40% participation goal. As of June 25, only about 750 more gifts are needed to meet the finish line.
As a member of Lafayette’s 100th class, Lindemann, a physics graduate, remembers special events held on campus throughout that year in celebration of the centennial.
“We staged the surrender at Yorktown,” he recalls. “I rode a horse and played the role of Baron von Steuben.” The pageant, held on Fisher Field, presented key scenes from the life of the Marquis de Lafayette.
For many years, Lindemann returned to campus for Reunion and football games and stayed in touch with two good friends, Carl Schuller ’32 and Ted Lewis ’32.
