The 640 members of the Class of 2017 will begin their college careers Thursday, Aug. 22, during the first day of Lafayette’s new student orientation.

The students officially will be welcomed to the College community Sunday evening during Convocation ceremonies opening the 182nd academic year. This is the first Convocation presided over by the College’s new president, Alison Byerly, and students from all class years are invited to attend. Byerly, Student Government president Michael Prisco ’14, and other speakers will welcome the students to campus.
The four-day orientation program is designed to focus on students’ intellectual and personal development and to help ease the transition to college life. Each year, orientation includes a summer reading assignment designed to pull students into ongoing campus conversations and the academic life of the College. This year’s discussion will be on In the Shadow of Man by world-renowned primatologist, conservationist, and humanitarian Jane Goodall. The selection comes on the heels of a spring semester that featured an exceptional set of guest speakers, including Goodall, Tony Blair, former prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States.

The Class of 2017 will be among the first to enjoy several new campus features such as a more environmentally sustainable and pedestrian-friendly Quad, a transformed Kirby Sports Center arena with new seating and video scoreboard, a unified and attractive campus-wide signage system, and McKelvy House gardens returned to the historic design concepts from 1914.
A group of first-year students has already been volunteering on campus and in the Easton community as part of the College’s Pre-Orientation Service Program. Projects include renovation work in the West Ward neighborhood, a summer day camp on campus and at Firth Youth Center, and crafts and games at the Easton Area Senior Center.
Classes begin Monday, Aug. 26, for new and returning students.

My daughter must have been excited to be part of this grand move-in to Lafayette. We parents are proud of her.
