President Alison Byerly emailed the following message to the campus community today:

Colleagues:

I write to update you on the plans underway to fill several administrative positions that will become vacant over the next three months. We are very fortunate in having experienced colleagues available who have graciously agreed to take on additional responsibilities during this transitional period.

I have appointed Kari Fazio to serve as Acting Vice President for Finance and Administration, effective July 1, and Kim Spang to serve as Acting Vice President of College Relations and Development, effective April 26. Both Kari and Kim already serve on the College’s Senior Staff and will join my Cabinet while serving in these acting capacities. In addition, Gary Evans ‘57, a former vice president of development at the College and emeritus trustee, has agreed to assist our development efforts in the role of Senior Campaign Advisor. As announced last January, Bob Massa will be moving into a new position as Senior Campaign Advisor as well once the Communications position is filled.

Kari Fazio, currently Associate Vice President for Finance and Business Operations, joined the College in 2008 and has overseen successes for the College in various areas including: Dining Services, Purchasing, Budgeting, Liquidity and Debt Management, the College Store, Post Office, Reprographics, and Financial Information Systems, among others.  Kari earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and her graduate degree from Columbia University.  She had experience in both the private and public sectors before joining Lafayette.

While Kari is fully overseeing the varied functions within the Finance and Administration Division, we have also asked Steve Schafer, Lafayette’s Controller and Associate Vice President, to take on some additional responsibilities in financial information systems, budgeting and coordination of payables and purchasing.

Kim Spang joined the College in 2003, holding positions in Major Gifts and Development before being appointed Associate Vice President of Development in 2010. A graduate of Kutztown University, Kim previously worked as a senior sales and marketing manager for the Walt Disney corporation. Kim will oversee the Development and College Relations functions, including Career Services, that are currently part of the Vice President’s portfolio, with the exception of Athletics.  Athletics will report to Vice President for Campus Life Annette Diorio. Annette will also assume responsibility for Public Safety, which formerly reported to the VP for Finance and Administration.

I am very grateful to these colleagues for their willingness to take on these additional responsibilities.

I am pleased to report that we have now appointed search committees for the Provost, Vice President for Communications, and VP for Finance and Administration searches. For the Provost position, Storbeck/Pimentel and Associates, Media, Pa., will serve as the search firm. The committee, which I will chair, includes Chris Ruebeck, Diane Shaw, Lisa Gabel, Kira Lawrence, Annette Diorio, John Meier, Scott Hummel, Elisabeth MacDonald, trustee; James Klimek ’15, Student Government academic affairs chair; and Jim Krivoski, ex officio.  That committee has already begun its work. Our search consultant feels optimistic that being at the front end of the hiring cycle for the coming year will serve us well. I will name an Interim Provost who will be available to serve if necessary between July 1 and the start date of the incoming provost.

For the Vice President for Communications search, we will work with The Ward Group, Woburn, Mass. The committee will be chaired by Mark Crain, and will include Kim Spang, Roger Clow, Greg McDonald, Ken Newquist, Jennifer Kelly, Jud Linville, trustee; Barbara Levy, trustee; and Jim Krivoski, ex officio.

The search for the Vice President for Finance and Administration will be chaired by Rosie Bukics, and will include Sam Chapin, trustee; Nancy Kuenstner, trustee; Hal Kamine, trustee; George Jenkins, trustee; John O’Keefe, Mary Roth, David Woglom, and Jim Krivoski, ex officio.  I am currently in the process of appointing members to the search committee and selecting a search firm for the Vice President for Development and College Relations.

I appreciate your patience and good will as we work our way through this period of change together.  The strength of our community is evident in the tremendous support you have shown for your colleagues, and in your commitment to supporting the College, and me, during this time.
