Lafayette honored more than 100 students for academic excellence at the annual All-College Honors Convocation May 4 in Colton Chapel. Awards and prizes recognized outstanding academic success in all four of Lafayette’s academic divisionsengineering, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.

This spring, 50 students will join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Outstanding students are eligible for election as juniors or seniors.

President Alison Byerly, Provost Wendy Hill, and Evan Fisher, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and professor of mathematics, offered remarks. Members of the Academic Progress Committee Anthony Cummings, professor of music, and Yih-Choung Yu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, awarded prizes.

The keynote speaker was Brent Glass ’69, director emeritus of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. A national leader in the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of history, Glass is a public historian who pioneered influential oral history and material culture studies, author, television presence, and international speaker on public memory and museum management.

As director of the National Museum of American History from 2002 to 2011, Glass led a two-year, $87 million renovation and development of 20 new exhibitions including a gallery for the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem, new public programs, and theater performances.
