President Alison Byerly sent the following message to the Lafayette community March 16.

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Amanda Miner ’18 was killed in a car accident in New York City early this morning. Amanda was at home in Brooklyn for spring break.

Amanda Miner ’18

I spoke with Amanda’s family earlier today and expressed deepest sympathies from all of us at the College. I invite you to gather for a vigil on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. in Colton Chapel, to comfort one another and share our memories of Amanda. We will provide information about her family’s plans for a memorial service when it becomes available.

Amanda was an anthropology and sociology major. Professor David Shulman was her advisor and recalls Amanda as being a person who “just radiated niceness; she had a great, winning personality.” In class, Shulman says, Amanda “spoke often, and had smart things to say. And she would speak her mind. If she had an opinion, she was going to offer it.”

Amanda went on an Alternative School Break trip to New Orleans in the spring of 2016 for Hurricane Katrina relief, and she spent five semesters as an America Reads tutor at Third Street Alliance in Easton, where she became “one of those tutors I will always remember because she just loved the program and was so dedicated,” says Christine Cohen, Lafayette’s America Reads director. “She will be greatly missed.” Her dedication to social justice issues also led Amanda to take an upper-level seminar when she was only a first-semester sophomore, working with teen mothers and homeless families living in shelters.

In addition to Tuesday’s vigil, a number of resources are available for students seeking support. The Counseling Center is open from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be reached by calling (610) 330-5005. In addition, College Chaplain Alex Hendrickson is available for counseling, and a student-led grief support group meets on Tuesdays at 4:15 p.m. in Farinon 220; those weekly meetings will resume on March 28.

I know that you all will join me in keeping Amanda’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Alison R. Byerly

President
