Expert offers insights into Catalonia’s bid for independence (VIDEO)
Highly industrialized. Proud of its language and culture. Fiercely independent. Which city, region, state, or country does this describe? In today’s political climate, many may come to mind. But the northeast corner of Spain has drummed up headlines as the world watches if Catalonia will break away from Spain.
Catalonia has been in the news this month for the trial of independence leaders and the controversy over Spain’s actions to prevent Catalan representatives from taking their seats in the European Parliament.
In a lecture entitled “Will Spain Break Up? Catalonia and the Clash of National Identities,” Prof. Luis Moreno-Fernández, a research professor for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIS), spoke with students and guests at the College on the future of Catalonia.
The event was sponsored in part by the Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government. John Kincaid, Robert B. and Helen S. Meyner Professor of Government and Public Service, sat down with Moreno-Fernández to discuss the political nuances of this situation.
